West Virginia has made an interesting switch. It used to be so staunchly Democratic that, in 1980, when Jimmy Carter mustered only 49 electoral votes against Ronald Reagan, six of those votes came from West Virginia.
But, as noted above, Bush carried the state both times. One theory is that the Democrats' renewed interest in environmental issues, led by Al Gore, scared away West Virginians who are economically dependent on coal mining.
McCain leads in the polls, but his lead is not large enough to say that the race is over.
